Water Softener Cost in 2026
Water softener cost for a whole-house salt system on Amazon runs from the $300–$600 band for compact and budget units to over $1,300 for twin-tank and combo systems; most 40,000–48,000 grain softeners sit in the $600–$900 band. Add installation if you don't do it yourself, then salt and water every year. So how much is a water softener system all in? Our top pick, the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K, is in that middle band; the full list is on our best water softener page.
How much is a water softener?
The water softener price you'll see online for a whole-house unit is roughly $500–$1,300 for the unit if you buy it online, based on the price bands of the softeners we rank (checked on Amazon, and in line with the $519–$1,231 range we saw at Lowe's and Walmart the same week). Dealer-installed systems with service contracts often cost much more, mostly for labour, branding and financing rather than different chemistry.
Soft water system cost: online vs dealer
A dealer's soft water system quote usually bundles the unit, installation, a service plan and sometimes a drinking-water filter, and is often presented as a monthly payment. To compare it with buying online, ask for the grain capacity, the valve make and model, the warranty terms and the installation line on their own. The salt based water softener cost online, plus a plumber's installation, is usually well below a bundled dealer price for the same capacity; what the dealer adds is service visits and one number to call.

Water softener installation cost
Soft water installation cost depends mostly on what plumbing is already there. If your home already has a softener loop (an in and out stub near the water heater) and a drain nearby, installation is a half-day DIY job with basic tools. Without a loop, a plumber has to cut into the main line, add a bypass and run a drain with an air gap, which usually costs a few hundred dollars depending on your area and pipe material; that's the water softener installation price most homeowners pay. Electrical work is rarely needed beyond a standard outlet. See water softener installation for the steps.
Running costs per year
The water softening system cost doesn't stop at the purchase. Each year you pay for:
- Salt: about 8–12 bags of 40 lb pellets a year for a family of four on 10–15 gpg water, more on very hard water. Potassium chloride costs several times as much.
- Water: each regeneration uses roughly 25–65 gallons depending on tank size; metered valves regenerate less often than timers.
- Electricity: the valve draws only a few watts.
- Upkeep: resin cleaner on iron water, a sediment cartridge if you have one, and a resin rebed after 10–15 years.
Timer vs metered valves: the running-cost difference
A timer valve regenerates on a fixed schedule whether you used water or not, so it burns salt during holidays and quiet weeks. A metered valve counts gallons and regenerates only when the resin is nearly spent. Every softener in our main ranking uses a metered or demand-based control, which is the single biggest lever on salt cost after buying the right size.
Costs people forget
A bypass valve and fittings if they aren't included; a pre-filter on wells; a drain line long enough to reach a floor drain or standpipe; and your time testing hardness and programming the valve. Salt-free systems skip salt and drain costs but need media replaced after their rated gallons (see salt-free vs salt). A well water softener system cost runs higher than city water: expect a larger grain size, a sediment pre-filter and, with iron, a dedicated iron filter (see well water softeners).
Water conditioner cost (salt-free)
Water conditioner cost splits by type. Whole-house TAC salt-free systems on Amazon sit in similar price bands to mid-size salt softeners, with no salt or drain water to pay for, but the media needs replacing after the gallons or years the maker states. Electronic descalers cost much less up front, with weaker evidence. Our salt-free picks show each one's band and published limits.
Repair or replace: what a new softener saves
A valve rebuild kit or new resin for a two-tank system usually costs a fraction of a new unit. Replacement makes sense when a cabinet softener's control board fails out of warranty, the tank leaks, or parts are no longer sold. Our maintenance guide covers the signs.
Ways to cut the running cost
- Set the hardness accurately; a setting that's too high wastes salt on every regeneration.
- Branch outdoor taps off before the softener.
- Use a metered valve's lower salt dose if your maker allows it; efficiency per pound of salt rises as dose falls.
- Buy pellets in bulk and store them dry to avoid bridging.
How much does a water softener cost?
How much does a whole house water softener cost in total? For the unit, roughly $500–$1,300 online for a whole-house salt softener, with most 40,000–48,000 grain systems in the $600–$900 band. Add installation if you hire it out, then salt and water every year.
How much does it cost to install a water softener?
Nothing but a few fittings if you DIY into an existing softener loop. A plumber typically charges a few hundred dollars for a straightforward job, more if the main line must be rerouted or a new drain added. Ask whether the quote includes the bypass, drain line and any permit.
Is it worth it?
On hard water, savings come from the benefits of a softener: less soap and detergent, fewer descaling jobs and longer water-heater life. On soft water, they don't. Test first; the buying guide includes a hardness reader and a size calculator so you don't overpay for capacity you won't use.
