First-hand use by the site owner, in use for more than six months. A home with very hard water and a tight space beside the water heater, installed by a professional plumber. These are personal observations, not lab measurements.
Why we installed it
Hard water had become a daily nuisance, and the shower glass was the worst of it: regular cleaning barely helped, and some mineral spots had to be scraped off with a razor blade. We wanted a proper whole-house softener instead of fighting the same build-up every week.
Installation and fit
A plumber installed it without any reported problems, so we can't judge a DIY install first-hand. Space was our main worry: the only spot was a tight area next to the water heater, and the GE fitted without taking over the whole space. GE lists the cabinet at 46 in tall, 15 in wide and 26 in deep, which matches our experience of a slim unit.
We connected it to the SmartHQ app during setup, and we'd recommend doing the same: checking status and maintenance information from a phone is genuinely convenient.
Potassium instead of salt
Our installer recommended potassium chloride pellets instead of sodium chloride salt, and we followed that advice, partly because we fill our dog's water bowl from the kitchen tap. Two bags of potassium pellets lasted us more than six months (we didn't record the bag size, and use depends on household size and hardness). Potassium costs more than salt, but for us the running cost was reasonable.
If you have pets, don't assume softened tap water is right for them: ask your veterinarian about sodium or potassium levels and the best drinking-water setup.
What changed
The biggest difference is in the bathroom: keeping the shower glass and other surfaces clean is now easy, without the stubborn white spots we used to scrape off. Skin feels better after showering and hair feels softer. Water pressure didn't noticeably change.
For the first few days the water felt unusually slippery, as if soap hadn't fully rinsed off. That's normal with softened water, because soap rinses differently without hardness minerals, and we got used to it quickly.
Verdict from our own use
One of the more worthwhile upgrades we've made. It solved our shower-glass problem, fitted a tight space and the app makes maintenance easy to keep on top of. We haven't needed customer support so far. We'd recommend it for homes with stubborn hard-water problems that need a compact whole-house softener; on very hard water in a large household, check the sizing table, since 35,000 grains is on the smaller side.
More on drinking water: see our softener and filtration picks; for setup, our installation guide covers programming hardness.
What we didn't measure: incoming hardness; softened-water hardness; days between regenerations; regeneration noise; valve settings used; pellet bag size. Test your own water before and after with a hardness test kit to confirm a softener is working.

Our take
The GE is the pick if you want to know what your softener is doing without walking to the basement. Alerts cover low salt and continuous water flow, which doubles as a crude leak alarm.
Capacity is the limit: at 35,000 grains it regenerates more often than the 48K units on very hard water.
How it compares on paper
- Against the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K: less capacity (35,000 vs 40,000 grains) and a lower rated flow (8* vs 11.02 gpm).
- Against the AFWFilters Fleck 5600SXT 48K: less capacity (35,000 vs 48,000* grains) and a lower rated flow (8* vs 14* gpm).
- Against the Aquasure Harmony 48K: less capacity (35,000 vs 48,000 grains) and a lower rated flow (8* vs 12* gpm).
