Best Salt-Free Water Softener Systems

The best salt-free water softener for home use in most cities is the Watts Premier OneFlow Plus, because its maker publishes the widest water limits of any salt-free system here and it adds a carbon stage for chlorine taste. One thing first: a salt free water softener does not soften. It conditions hard water so less scale sticks to pipes and heaters, but the calcium and magnesium stay in the water. If you want soft water, see our best water softener systems instead.

Saltless water softener: what the label means

"Saltless water softener", "salt-free softener" and "water conditioner" usually describe the same thing: a tank of template-assisted crystallisation (TAC) media that turns dissolved minerals into microscopic crystals that rinse through instead of forming scale. Your water will still test hard on a strip, soap will still lather like hard water, and there is no slippery soft-water feel.

Best saltless water softener for your water

Salt-free systems publish limits, and the best saltless water softener (or best non salt water softener, as it's also searched) is the one whose limits your water fits. The A. O. Smith Salt-Free Scale Control lists a maximum of 15 gpg, while the Aquasure Serene Lite lists 25 gpg* for municipal water. Above those, or with iron over a few ppm, buy a salt-based softener (our salt-free water softener vs salt water softener guide compares them).

Do saltless water softeners really work?

The TAC type does, within limits. A WateReuse Research Foundation study led by Arizona State University (project 08-06, released in 2014) tested alternatives to ion-exchange softeners on Colorado River water and a groundwater, and reported that template-assisted crystallisation reduced scale formation by more than 88%. The catch is the conditions: results depend on staying inside the maker's limits for hardness, pH, iron and chlorine, which is why we rank these systems by their published limits first. Remember that TAC prevents scale; it doesn't soften, so soap and spotting benefits don't apply.

What is the best alternative to salt water softeners?

Water softener alternatives fall into four groups: TAC conditioners, potassium chloride in an ordinary softener, electronic or magnetic descalers, and citric-acid or polyphosphate cartridges. Only the first two have strong evidence for whole-house use.

For scale protection without salt, a TAC system like the Watts Premier OneFlow Plus is the best-supported alternative. Potassium chloride in a normal softener is the other option: it still softens fully but swaps sodium for potassium. Electronic and magnetic descalers are cheaper, but independent evidence for them in household plumbing is thinner and less consistent. Which alternative fits depends on whether you want soft water (use potassium) or only less scale (use TAC).

Can a salt-free water softener filter water?

The conditioning media itself doesn't filter. Some systems add a filter stage: the Watts Premier OneFlow Plus includes a carbon block for chlorine taste, and the Kind Water Systems E-3000 and Aquasure Serene Lite add pre-filtration. If your water needs real filtration, see salt-free water softener and filtration systems.

Best salt free water softener for well water?

Possible, but only if the well is clean. A. O. Smith says its unit works on city or well water, yet it and Water Boss both set iron limits of 0.3 ppm, and Watts sets 0.3 ppm iron and 0.05 ppm manganese. Most wells with any staining exceed that, so they need iron filtration first or a salt-based well water softener instead.

Whole house salt free water softener sizing (flow rate)

A whole house salt free water softener is sized by flow, not grains, because there is no regeneration. Match the system's flow rating to your peak demand: roughly 2 gpm per shower plus 1.5 gpm per running appliance. The Kind Water Systems E-3000 is rated 15 gpm, the highest here, against 10 gpm for the Watts and 7 gpm for the Water Boss Salt-Free Scale Control (whose Amazon listing claims more). A water softener system salt free install is simple: no drain line, no electrical outlet, just in and out connections and usually a bypass valve.

Maintenance is the other appeal of a water softener salt free design: no salt bags, no backwash water, and media that typically lasts for the rated gallon capacity. Pre-filter cartridges, if your system has them, are the only routine cost.

Best water conditioner picks (salt-free conditioners)

If you searched for the best water conditioner for a home, the TAC systems above are what you want; they are the best water conditioner systems with published water limits; the best TAC water conditioner here is the Watts Premier OneFlow Plus. The best salt free water conditioner for most city homes is the same Watts Premier OneFlow Plus. Electronic and magnetic "conditioners" that clamp onto a pipe are sold under the same name, but the evidence for them is weak, so we don't rank them; read what a water conditioner is before buying one.

"Soft water conditioner": why the water isn't actually soft

A product sold as the best soft water conditioner still leaves hardness in the water. That's fine for scale protection, and it's why some people prefer it: the minerals stay, sodium doesn't go up, and nothing is discharged to a septic system.

SpringWell FutureSoft salt free water softener

The SpringWell FutureSoft salt free water softener is popular, but it isn't sold on Amazon, so it isn't in our ranking (we only rank products we can link to and track for stock). If you're comparing it, check the same three numbers we use here: hardness limit, iron limit and flow.

Questions people ask

What is the best salt-free water softener?
The Watts Premier OneFlow Plus: its maker publishes the widest limits (up to 30 gpg) and it adds a carbon stage.
Do salt-free water softeners actually work?
TAC systems reduce scale formation inside their stated limits; an independent WateReuse study found more than 88% scale reduction. They don't soften, so test strips still read hard.
Can a salt-free softener be used on well water?
Only on clean wells: the makers here set iron limits around 0.3 ppm. Most wells with staining need iron filtration first or a salt-based softener.
Do salt-free water softeners really work?
TAC systems reduce scale formation when your water is inside their stated hardness, pH and iron limits. They don't remove hardness, so test strips will still read hard.
Is a salt-free system OK for a septic tank?
Yes: there's no brine discharge, which is one of the main reasons people choose one.
How long does salt-free media last?
Makers rate it in gallons treated, usually several hundred thousand, which is several years for most homes; check the rated capacity on each review.
