Questions and answers

What is the best water softener system?
For most city homes, the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K, our #1 in the best water softener rankings. On a private well with iron, the Kenmore 420 is the better system.
What's the best water softener on a budget?
The Tier1 48K: full-size capacity in the lowest price band we found. Check its warranty terms before you buy.
Do salt-free water softeners work?
They reduce scale inside their stated limits but don't remove hardness. Our top pick is the Watts Premier OneFlow Plus; see salt-free vs salt.
How do I know if I have hard water?
Look for white crust on faucets, spots on glasses and poor lather, then confirm with a test strip. Above about 7 gpg (120 ppm) is hard.
What size softener do I need?
People × 75 gallons × hardness in gpg × about 7 days, plus 25% headroom. A family of four on 12 gpg needs roughly 32,000–40,000 grains.
How much salt does a water softener use?
Often around one 40 lb bag a month for a family of four on moderately hard water with a metered valve; more on very hard water.
Is softened water safe to drink?
For most people, yes. It contains a little extra sodium, roughly 8 mg per litre per gpg removed. On a low-sodium diet, use potassium chloride or keep an unsoftened tap.
Will a water softener remove iron?
Modest amounts of dissolved (clear-water) iron, up to the maker's stated limit. Red iron, iron bacteria or high iron need a dedicated iron filter first.
How long does a water softener last?
Valves can be rebuilt; resin usually lasts 10–15 years on city water and less with chlorine or iron.
How often does a water softener regenerate?
A well-sized metered softener regenerates about every 5–8 days. Timer models regenerate on a schedule whether or not you used water.
Does a water softener add sodium to water?
Yes, a little: about 8 mg per litre for each gpg of hardness removed. Potassium chloride avoids it.
Can I install a water softener myself (DIY)?
Yes, if you can cut into the main line and run a drain with an air gap; otherwise hire a plumber. See our installation guide.
What is NSF/ANSI 44 certification and why does it matter?
NSF/ANSI 44 is the US standard for residential softeners. A certified system has been independently tested for hardness reduction, rated capacity, salt efficiency claims and structural integrity, so its numbers are verified, not just claimed.
Which water softeners are NSF certified?
In our rankings, the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K is the only system whose maker confirms NSF/ANSI 44 certification (by IAPMO). Other listings say 'NSF certified' without naming the standard, so we don't show those claims. To check NSF certified water softeners yourself, search the model number in the NSF, IAPMO or WQA certified-product listings; a real certificate names the standard (NSF/ANSI 44) and the exact model.
Where to buy a water softener?
Online (Amazon and the makers' own stores), home-improvement stores, or a local water-treatment dealer. Online and big-box units cost less and you install them or hire a plumber; dealers charge more but include installation and service. Whichever you choose, compare grain capacity, flow, valve type and warranty rather than the brand name; our water softener cost guide compares the routes.
Do water softeners waste water?
Each regeneration uses tens of gallons. Metered (on-demand) valves regenerate only when needed, which cuts waste compared with timer valves.
Does a water softener shower head soften water?
No. Shower filters reduce chlorine but don't remove meaningful hardness.
Do I need a water softener with a tankless water heater?
On hard water, it's strongly recommended: scale builds quickly in tankless heat exchangers. Check your heater maker's water-quality requirements.
Can a water softener make water taste salty?
Not when it's working. A salty taste usually means a regeneration didn't rinse fully, the brine line is faulty or the salt setting is too high; run a manual regeneration and check the settings.
Do I still need a water filter if I have a softener?
A softener removes hardness, not chlorine, lead or most other contaminants. If taste or contaminants are a concern, add carbon filtration or under-sink RO.
Should outdoor taps be softened?
No. Branch outdoor taps off before the softener so you don't spend salt on garden water.
