AFWFilters Fleck 9100SXT Twin 48K Review

Verdict: A twin-tank Fleck 9100SXT system sold by AFWFilters: two 48,000-grain resin tanks alternate on a metered valve, so one is always in service while the other regenerates. It ranks #9 in our best water softener systems list.

Hands-on: used in our own household, installed June 2026 and in use for about five months. Read our notes.

Hands-on notes: the AFWFilters Fleck 9100SXT Twin 48K in our own household

First-hand use by the site owner, installed June 2026 and in use for about five months. A household of five with frequent showers, in an area with high water costs and occasional mandatory rationing. Bought from AFWFilters and self-installed. These are personal observations, not lab measurements.

Why we chose a twin-tank system

With five people showering often, we wanted a softener that could keep up without interruptions or wasted regenerations. Water is expensive where we live and rationing is sometimes imposed, which was the main reason we chose a twin-tank system over a conventional single tank.

While one tank supplies soft water, the other waits ready; when the active tank is exhausted, the valve switches over and regenerates the spent one. A single tank has to regenerate on a schedule that may not match real use, either too early or before its scheduled time. With the twin, there's no schedule to plan around and no vacation mode to set: it responds to actual water use.

Why Fleck

Fleck is a well-known valve brand, and replacement parts are easy to find and reasonably priced, including on Amazon. Some softener makers use proprietary parts that are expensive or hard to source, so parts availability was a big factor for equipment we expect to run for years.

Installation

Installation was fairly straightforward. The included manual explains the programming parameters, and AFWFilters added its own install instructions, which helped. If you've never programmed a softener before, a video tutorial alongside the manual makes it easier.

Buy a spare yoke of the right size before you start. The yoke threads are plastic and strip or cross-thread easily if the connections aren't perfectly aligned, and a spare can save a frustrating delay.

Two design changes we'd like: a left-hand hookup option, which would cut down plumbing in some layouts, and yokes made for 3/4-inch or 1-inch PEX, which most modern homes use.

Day-to-day

It does what we bought it for: continuous soft water for a busy household of five, with no interruption during regeneration. Metered, on-demand regeneration suits an area where water and electricity costs matter. The build feels solid.

Verdict from our own use

For a high-use household, a worthwhile investment. The continuous supply and on-demand regeneration are its biggest strengths, and Fleck's affordable, easy-to-find parts were the deciding factor. It takes more space and costs more up front than a single tank, and the yoke and hookup options could be better, but we'd choose a twin-tank Fleck again.

More on drinking water: see our softener and filtration picks; for setup, our installation guide covers programming hardness.

What we didn't measure: incoming and softened-water hardness; salt use; regeneration intervals. Test your own water before and after with a hardness test kit to confirm a softener is working.

Who the AFWFilters Fleck 9100SXT Twin 48K is for

Large or high-use households, especially where water is expensive or rationed, that want continuous soft water and serviceable Fleck parts.

Who should skip it

Small households or tight utility rooms: a single-tank softener is cheaper and smaller.

Pros

  • Soft water around the clock: one tank always online
  • Fleck parts are easy to find and reasonably priced, including on Amazon
  • Metered, on-demand regeneration with no schedule or vacation mode to manage

Cons

  • Plastic yoke threads strip or cross-thread easily; buy a spare
  • No PEX yoke option and no left-hand hookup
  • Takes more floor space and costs more up front than a single tank

Our take

A single-tank softener has to take itself offline to regenerate, usually at night. The 9100SXT alternates between two resin tanks on one metered valve, so when the active tank is exhausted it switches to the freshly regenerated one and there is never a window of hard water.

AFWFilters builds the system around Fleck's 9100SXT valve, a widely used dealer-standard head, which is why replacement parts are easy to source. The listing specifies 48,000 grains per tank with Purolite C100E resin; we show those values as listing claims until AFWFilters' documentation confirms them.
