Aquasana SimplySoft 40K Review

Verdict: A single-cabinet salt softener with the highest maker-rated flow among the cabinet units we compared, and the only pick independently certified (by IAPMO) to NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction. It ranks #1 in our best water softener systems list.

Hands-on: used in our own household, September 25 – November 1, 2026, about five weeks. Read our notes.

Hands-on notes: the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K in our own household

First-hand use by the site owner, September 25 – November 1, 2026, about five weeks. An older house, used as the whole-house softener. Installed with help from an experienced handyman. These are personal observations, not lab measurements.

Why we installed it

Before moving into an older house without any water treatment, our owner lived in a newer home with whole-house filtration and softening. After the move, hair became dry and brittle and skin felt rough and flaky, and both improved noticeably on hotel stays, then came back at home. That's what prompted this purchase.

Installation

Installation was fairly straightforward with someone handy with plumbing. The surprise was the weight: the cabinet is heavy and solid, and moving it into position is hard for one person, so plan on two people.

The hardness is set on the control panel. That turned out to matter more than we expected (see below).

What we noticed over five weeks

Hair feels softer and looks shinier, and skin feels less dry, which was the main reason for buying it. Water pressure didn't noticeably drop in normal household use.

The water sometimes felt very slippery, as if soap were still on the hands, and on a few occasions hands looked wrinkled, as after a long swim. That slick feel is common with softened water, because soap rinses off differently without calcium and magnesium; it doesn't mean soap is left behind.

We've also become more comfortable using kitchen and fridge water again instead of buying bottled water. Note that a softener removes hardness, not contaminants: it doesn't purify water, so if drinking-water quality is the concern, add filtration (see our softener and filtration picks).

The settings issue and Aquasana support

Early on it didn't seem that hardness was dropping as expected, and the slippery feel raised questions about the setup. Aquasana support said the hardness value on the control panel had been increased and sent the manual. Reading it made clear that the hardness setting must match your actual incoming water hardness, which means testing first.

The support experience was mixed: the manual helped, but the technical questions (how to confirm the unit is actually softening, how the ion-exchange cycle works) weren't fully answered. Mechanically, the unit has run without problems so far.

Verdict from our own use

Positive overall: solid construction, a manageable install and a noticeable difference in hair and skin. The lessons: test your hardness before programming the panel, don't change the setting without understanding it, and keep the manual handy, because phone support may not answer detailed questions. We'd like smoother setup guidance and better-trained technical support.

More on drinking water: see our softener and filtration picks; for setup, our installation guide covers programming hardness.

What we didn't measure: incoming hardness (no test before installation); softened-water hardness after installation; days between regenerations; salt use; regeneration noise; installation time. Test your own water before and after with a hardness test kit to confirm a softener is working.

Who the Aquasana SimplySoft 40K is for

Homes on city water with up to four bathrooms that want one tidy cabinet and a certified softener.

Who should skip it

Wells with iron or sediment, unless you add a pre-filter; very large homes that need more than 40,000 grains between regenerations.

Pros

  • Cabinet design keeps resin and salt in one box, so it fits beside a water heater
  • Listing states metered mode uses less salt and water than timed regeneration
  • Rated on the listing for both city and well water

Cons

  • Pre-filter is sold separately
  • In our own use, setup guidance was thin and support didn't fully answer technical questions
  • Standard 8% crosslink resin is less tolerant of chlorine than the 10% resin in the Fleck system
  • Fewer buyer reports on Amazon than the Aquasure or Fleck systems

Our take

The SimplySoft is a cabinet softener: the resin tank sits inside the salt cabinet, so the footprint is a single box rather than two tanks side by side. That matters in a utility closet, and it is the main reason we put it ahead of the two-tank Fleck system for typical city homes.

Aquasana's installation manual confirms the certification: IAPMO R&T tested it against NSF/ANSI 44 for hardness reduction, plus NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 (lead-free) and CSA B483.1. It is the only softener on our list with a named, maker-confirmed performance certification, which is the main reason it ranks first.

One correction to the Amazon listing: Aquasana's own manual rates service flow at about 11 gpm, not the 15.5 gpm on the listing. That is still the highest of the cabinet units here and plenty for a typical 3–4 bathroom home. The cabinet stands 43 inches tall and holds about 230 lb of salt, close to a separate brine tank.
