Our take

Shower filters reduce chlorine; none of them exchange calcium for sodium the way a softener does.

How it compares with a handheld filtered head: the SF100 keeps whatever spray you already have, which matters if you like a rain head or a high-pressure fixed head. A handheld filtered head replaces that spray with its own. If chlorine smell is the only complaint and you like your shower, inline is the better choice; if you also want a hose for rinsing the tub, a handheld like the Cobbe makes more sense.

An inline filter screws onto the shower arm and your existing head screws onto it, so you keep the spray you already like. The cartridge pulls out without tools. Its stated life of 3–6 months depends on how many showers it serves and how heavily your water is chlorinated.

What it won't do is soften. The minerals that leave white crust on glass pass straight through, so if spotting is your main complaint, test your hardness and look at whole-house softeners instead. As a chlorine filter for a renter or a single bathroom, it's the most widely bought option we found.

Check the thread size before ordering: most US shower arms are 1/2 in NPT, which this fits, but some European fittings differ. Also allow for the extra length; on a low shower arm the head may end up lower than you're used to.
